When to use a Text Box

Cannot be inserted if the document has protected areas.

Options

(Edit tab, Insert/Paste pictures as) - Changes the default behaviour for how pictures and objects are inserted.
(General tab, Update automatic links at open) -
(View tab, Picture placeholders) -
(View tab, Object anchors) -

When to use a Frame

You should only use a frame when you need to include one of the above in a text box.
Despite all the advantages of text boxes there are a couple of things that text boxes cannot contain:
0) Form Fields.
1) Comments (annotations).
2) Footnotes.
3) Certain Fields, such as AutoNum, AutoNumLgl, AutoNumOut, TC, TOC, RD, XE, TA, and TOA.

Can be inserted into a document that has protected areas.
Cannot be manually moved if the document has protected areas ??

When an object has been "inlined" it is treated like text so it has the same paragraph alignment and line spacing attributes of the containing paragraph. It can also be cut and pasted elwhere (or dragged or dropped)
You can switch between the "floating" or "inline" states on the (Format > Format Object / Format Picture) "Float over text checkbox"
Any floating objects will be placed in the drawing layer as opposed to the text layer and this drawing layer can be both behind and infront of the text layer
You can right-click the object and choose the "Order" menu to send you text behind or bring in front of the text layer
You can wrap text around an object by pressing (Format > Format Object / Format Picture)(Wrapping tab)
If you are wrapping your text around an object the text must have a one-inch wide area between the object and the page margin otherwise the text will move below the object
If an object is "floating" it must be anchored to a particular paragraph. When that pargraph is cut and pasted (to a new page) then so is the object. If the paragraph moves up or down on the same page, the object may or may not move depending if it is positioned relative to the paragrph or the page. These settings can be adjusted from (Format > Format Object / Format Picture)(Position tab)
You can view an object anchor select (Tools > Options)(View tab, Object Anchors) Even with this option checked the anchor will only appear once the object is selected
Grouping your objects helps keeps them together and makes them easier to use
When you insert an object into a paragraph you can make sure that it stays with the paragraph (Format > Format Picture)(Position tab) select "Lock Anchor" and "Move with Text" checkboxes

(Tools > Options)(Edit tab)

Insert/Paste Pictures as
This option changes the default insertion behaviour
in line with text - the picture/object is inserted into the text flow and moved as the text flow changes
in front of text" - the picture/object is positioned at an absolute position in the document and will not change when the text flow changes.

Symbols, Codes & Equations

The letters and symbols that appear on the keyboard are sufficient for most documents, although there may be times when you need to insert a foreign word containing symbols that are not in the English alphabet.
For mathematical use the Windows System font contains the Greek alphabet and a variety of mathematical symbols. There are foreign characters in most of the normal fonts.
To insert a symbol or foreign letter (Insert > Symbol) select the particular font required and all the symbols will be displayed.
To add a quick accent mark to a character, press (Ctrl + "'"(apostrophe), and type the character. To get a reverse accent mark type (Ctrl + "`")

Foreign Languages

If a portion of a document or indeed all of it is to be written in a foreign language then Word needs to be aware of this (Tools > Language > Set Language)
