WebView Control

For Office Add-ins to run on a Windows Desktop they need to use a Web Viewer control.
The latest version installed on the machine is the version that will be used.


Version 1 - IE 11

The first version of this WebView control leveraged Internet Explorer 11.
Available on Windows 7, 8 and 10 (< 1903)
This uses the default browser control.
IE11 does not support ES 2016.

Version 2.0 - Edge HTML WebView

This is available on Windows 10.
Available on Windows 10 (> 1903) and Office 365 (16.0.11629)
Supports all HTML5 features.
Support for ES 2016 and above.
Beginning with Office 365 version 16.0.11629 and Windows 10 version 1903, Office Add-ins running on Office 365 for Windows will use a Microsoft Edge WebView as the runtime.
Windows 10 version 19XX and Office 16.0.11326.2000 + will default to using the new Edge WebView control
Publicly available from April / May 2019.

Version 3.0 - Edge Chromium WebView2

The WebView2 control uses Microsoft Edge (Chromium) as the rendering engine to display the web content in native applications.
Available in latest Office 365
