All the slides are based on slide layouts.
The default layout for the first slide in a presentation is the Title.
The default layout for all the subsequent slides in a presentation are Title and Text

Slide Layouts are very important because they contain the type and position of the "content placeholders" on the slides.

Any text boxes that have the text "Click to add" are called text placeholders.

Every slide has a slide layout that controls how the information is arranged on the slide.
A slide layout is just a collection of one or more placeholders, which set aside an area of the slide to hold information.
Depending on the layout that you choose for a slide, the placeholders can hold text, graphics, clip art, tables, charts, diagrams or other types of content.

Using the AutoLayout is an easy way to create a new slide because the AutoLayout positions other elements on the slide for you.

Every slide has a background which provides a backdrop for the slide.
The background can be a solid colour a blend of two colours, a particular pattern or an image file.
Each slide can have a different background although you normally use the same one for consistency.

There are 24 slide layouts to choose from.

Slide Layouts contain placeholders for text, charts, clipart and organisation charts.
To select an AutoLayout use the task pane ??

Here is a description of the placeholder symbols:

  • Text Placeholder

  • Chart placeholder

  • Clipart placeholder

  • Table placeholder

  • Organisation chart placeholder

You can increase or decrease the AutoLayout placeholder area.
Select the placeholder and resize by placing the mouse over a corner and, when the pointer is double-headed arrow drag the mouse.
This can be done for all slides using the Slide Master.
You can type text into any text placeholder.
Click the text placeholder and start typing.

Additional objects can be added to a slide by selecting (Insert > Object).

You can change the type of slide layout used for a slide by selecting (Format > Slide Layout) ??

Slide Backgrounds

Every slide has a background, which provides a backdrop for the slide's content.
Keep your backgrounds simple. The purpose of the background is to provide a well-defined visually appealing space for the slides content.
The background can be a solid colour; a blend of two colours; a subtle texture such as ??? A pattern such as bricks or an image.
Each slide can have a different background but you normally use the same one for every slide to provide consistency throughout the presentation.

It is possible to change the background for all the slides in a presentation or to change the background of an individual slide.

Choose (View > Slide Sorter)
Choose (Format > Custom Background)
Click Apply or click Apply to All

Slide Thumbnails

When you hover over a slide the slide title is displayed as a tooltip.

You can display a slide thumbnails view of your slides by using the Slides tab in the left hand pane when in Normal view.
