Multiple Master Slides

PowerPoint 2003 and 2002 allow you to include multiple title and slide masters in the same presentation.
This has several advantages:
1) Allows you to create different slide layouts for different sections of your presentation.
2) Allows you to combone two completely different presentations into a single file and be able to preserve their appearance.
If you open a presentation that contains multiple Master Slides in PowerPoint 2000 or 97, the master slides associated with the first slide will be used throughout the presentation.

Check your Options

To be able to add multiple Master Slides to a presentation make sure this option is not selected. (Tools > Options)(Edit tab, "Multiple Masters").

Masters Slide Relationships

Every Title Master must have an corresponding Slide Master.

Creating an Additional Slide Master

Select (View > Master > Slide Master) to display the Slide Master View.
Select (Insert > ??)
Alternatively you can use the "Insert New Slide Master" button on the Slide Master View toolbar.
A new slide master with the default format will be added to the presentation.
When you have finished making your changes select (View > Normal) or select the Close Master View button on the Slide Master View toolbar.
Another way of creating an additional Slide Master is to duplicate an existing one.
To insert a copy of an existing slide master select (Edit > Duplicate) or press (Ctrl + D).

Creating an Additional Title Master

You can add a new title master to any existing slide master as long it doe not already have a title master.
Select (Insert > New Title Master.
Alternatively you can use the "Insert New Title Master" button on the Slide Master View toolbar.
A new title master with the default format will be added to the presentation.
The title master will be automatically connected to its corresponding slide master.
SS
A grey line is used to indicate the link between the slide and title masters.

When you create a Title Master, the title master inherits certain formatting from its slide master.
Once the title master has been created the title and slide master can be formatted independently.
Duplicating a slide master will also duplicate the title master (assuming there is one).
The following items are automatically inherited from the Slide Master:
1) Colour Scheme
2) Font type, size and colour
3) Background colour and/of graphic
NOT placeholder position
This lets you make your changes once to the Slide master instead of duplicating the formatting again for the Title Master.

Deleting a Master Slide

There are several ways to delete an existing slide master from a presentation:
1) (Edit > Delete Master)
2) Press the Delete Key
3) Press the Delete Master button on the Slide Master View toolbar.
If you delete a slide master that is paired with a title master, the title master will also be deleted.

Applying different Master Slides

When a presentation contains multipel master slides you can select which master slide to use by using the Slide Design task pane.
Select (Format > Slide Design) to display the Slide Design task pane.
SS
This task pane will display a list of all the master slides contained in the active presentation.
Always use the drop-down arrow next to the slide layout (as opposed just clicking on the slide layout) to change the layout.

Inserting Slides

When you have multiple masters which master is used for a new slide is determined by the master used by the preceeding slide.

Things to Watch Out For

  • Displaying the Slide Design task pane and clicking directly onto a slide layout does not always have the same effect.

If you have more than one slide selected, the slide layout is only applied to the selected slides.
If you only have one slide selected, the slide layout is applied to the whole presentation.

  • Any slide masters that are not being used will be automatically removed the presentation. You can prevent this from happening by Preserving your Master Slides.

  • If you accidentally apply incorrect slide masters to any of your slides you can always use the (Edit > Undo) to restore your presentation to its original layout

If you want to add an additional Title Master to a presentation this must be paired with an existing Slide Master (that is not currently paired with a Title Master).
This lets you combine multiple slides in the same presentation.
You can only have one handout and one notes master

To insert a new Slide Master select the "Insert New Slide Master" button on the Master Slide View toolbar.
A new slide thumbnail will be added.
You can add a new Title Master slide to any slide master that does not yet have a Title Master paired with it
First select an available slide master and select (Insert > New Title Master).
You can see that the Title Master and the Slide Master are connected with a line. This indicates that this slide and title master are paired.
When you create a Title Master, the Title master inherits any formatting from its slide master.
However once created the Title Master and Slide Master are formatted independently.
If you change the format of the Slide master the title master is not changed and visa versa.
To delete a Title master, click the master you want to delete and click the Delete Master button on the Slide Master View toolbar or select (Edit > Delete Master). Or press Delete.
If you delete a Slide Master that is paired with a Title Master the Title master will also be deleted.

If you have created multiple masters for a presentation you can select which master to use for each slide in the presentation.
Select the slide and choose (Format > Slide Design) to display the slide design task pane.
This displays thumbnails of all the design templates and slide masters which you can apply.
"used in this presentation" section
use the arrow to select all or just active slide
