Selecting Text

When you use the keyboard, hold down the Shift key while you press any of the cursor movement keys to move the cursor
When you use the mouse, point to the beginning of the text that you want to select and click and drag the mouse over the text. Release the mouse button when you reach the end of the text you want to select.

PowerPoint has an automatic word selection option that tries to guess when you intend to select an entire word.
When you use the mouse to select text that includes at least one full word the selected text will always include entire words as you move your mouse.
This automatic word selection can be removed by selecting (Tools > Options(Edit tab, "When selecting, automatically select entire word").

You can use the following to select different amounts of text:
Single Word
To select a single word, point the cursor anywhere in the word and double click with the left mouse button.

Entire Paragraph
To select an entire paragraph, point anywhere in the paragraph and triple click with the left mouse button.

You can either select the whole textbox
or use (Ctrl + A) to select all the text

When you want to affect / format all the text in a text object you must select the entire object by selecting the edge of the object. When the entire object is selected you will see eight re-sizing handles on a grey outline border.

To replace an entire block of text, select it and start typing the new text.
