Clause


1) What is a Clause ?
A clause is the basic unit of grammar.
A clause must contain a verb.
A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb that have a relationship.
Clauses are the building blocks of English sentences, groups of words that contain a subject and a verb.



2) How many different types of Clauses are there ?
Main Clause - A clause in a sentence which makes sense on its own
Dependent Clause - (more than one word) part of a sentence you can take out and the sentence still makes sense.
A dependent clause does not make sense on its own.
Relative Clause - can be used to give additional information about a noun.



3) What is a Main Clause ?
A clause in a sentence which makes sense on its own.



4) What is a Dependent Clause ?
Also known as a Subordinate Clause, Embedded Clause or Subclause
Eg: My Granny (who is 99), lives in London
Eg: I know "that Bob is a dolphin"
Eg: (When Ryan arrives tomorrow), We will go to the cinema
Eg: Ryan (who is my cousin) loves swimming



5) What is a Relative Clause ?
Can be used to give additional information about a noun.
