This was removed due to a patent lawsuit made by a company called i4i.

2007 and 2003

This task pane was introduced in 2003 and was also available in 2007
Allows you to add custom xml markup to your document
Lets you add/remove edit elements based on an attached schema
Allows you to open edit and save XML (.xml) files directly
Allows direct editing of XML files

Direct Editing in 2007

Open a simple xml data file
The XML document task pane is displayed (close this)
Developer tab, XML group, structure
Displays the XML structure task pane
Save the file as Word 2003 XML Document (.xml) or Word XML Document (.xml)
Neither of these file formats support Content Controls
