Verbs


1) What is a Verb ?
Also known as Main Verb or Normal Verb
(a verb often changes depending on who is doing the action)
A doing or being word.
Eg: I (read) comics
Eg: He (reads) comics
Eg: He was (screaming) at me


2) Can verbs be plural ?
Yes. Verbs can be singular and plural.
Eg - runs (this is plural)
Eg - run (this is singular)


3) How many different types of Verbs are there ?
A verb expresses an action, state or occurrence.
Main Verb -
Eg: I (bake) biscuits
Eg: Steve (does) his homework
Modal Verb - shows certainty or possibility.
modal verbs are additional verbs that cannot be on there own (only with a main verb).
Eg: might, ought, shall, will, may, should, could, would, can, must
Eg: Richard loves hockey, but he (may) start playing netball too.
Eg: Sarah (must) be tired after running to school.
Action / Dynamic Verb - the main person or thing does the action (also called Active verb, Event verb)
Passive Verb - the main person or thing has the action done to it
Powerful Verb - adds more interest to your writing

A proverb is a short saying that gives advice or tells you something

6) What is Tense ?
Tense is the form of a verb that shows the time something happened, or is going to happen


7) What is Past Tense ?
If something is written in the past tense, it means it has already happened.


8) What is Present Tense ?
This is the verb tense used to describe a current event or state of being


9) What is Future Tense ?
This is the verb tense used to describe a future event or state of being


10) When is a verb in the Active Voice ?
In the active voice the relationship between the verb and the subject is clear:
Eg: The company gave Paul a car.
company is the subject, gave is the verb/action


11) When is a verb in the Passive Voice ?
This is used when the action is the focus, not the subject
Eg: Paul was given a car by the company.
In this sentence it is not important or we do not know who does the action.
To change it to passive, the verb is changed to 'be + past participle'.
The subject of the verb is left out or introduced with 'by'.
