A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal.

An alkali is a substance that forms an aqueous solution with a pH of more than 7.
Alkalis must dissolve in water to release hydroxide ions.
For example: Without water sodium hydroxide in its solid state is a BASE, but if dissolves in water it becomes a strong alkali.
The release of the hydroxide ions is what makes the solution alkaline.
