2) Hidden bookmarks do not show square brackets in the document even if select to show bookmarks in the document.

3) The bookmarks that Word adds automatically when inserting a cross-reference start with an underscore.
This means that they act as "hidden" bookmarks that are not visible in the Bookmark dialog box unless to show hidden bookmarks.
